Dentures: Fixed vs. Removable
By: BritelyDentures: The World’s Most Popular Teeth Replacement
Almost everyone knows what a denture is. It’s gained a reputation as the most popular option to replace missing teeth. But, there are many, many types of “dentures.” There are different materials, different sizes, and different qualities of dentures, not to mention all the different providers. In this article, I’m only going to focus one key differentiator in dentures: whether the denture is fixed in your mouth or removable. Hopefully at the end of this, you’ll find you have a better understanding of which one is right for you.
Fixed vs. Removable Dentures
One of the easiest ways to differentiate a denture is to categorize it as either fixed or removable. Now, the categories are pretty straightforward. A fixed denture means it is fixed in your mouth and cannot be easily removed, if at all (I’ll explain how below). A removable denture is what people often think about when they think of a denture. It’s easily transferred in and out of one’s mouth, providing plenty of comedy (and sometimes embarrassing moments)!
PROS AND CONS: REMOVABLE
The traditional removable denture is typically chosen for its budget-friendly price. For example, at Britely, we offer our removable Classic Denture at $399 per arch. But the removable denture also has a few drawbacks, such as…
- Limits what food you can eat
- Needs to be relined over time to fit your mouth
- Does not help prevent bone loss in your jaw from missing teeth
PROS AND CONS: FIXED
A fixed denture is considered an upgrade from a traditional removable denture. Fixed dentures are accomplished by using dental implants to retain the denture in your mouth. A fixed denture is a popular choice among people who want to avoid the drawbacks of a removable denture. Do you crave chewy foods (like steak)? You should consider a fixed denture for maximum function while eating. In addition, the dental implants used to support a fixed denture help prevent premature aging that can occur when you lose bone in your jaw from missing teeth.
Sometimes see patients who are long-time removable denture wearers, and they’re tired of missing out on their favorite foods or struggling with a denture that just doesn’t fit right. I usually recommend upgrading their denture to a fixed option, which takes care of these concerns.
Fixed dentures range in pricing, depending on things like how many dental implants are used and what type of denture material you choose.
Which Choice is Right for You?
If you’re trying to decide between a fixed or removable denture, the choice is between function and price. Ask yourself, “Do I want my dentures to feel and function just like real teeth?” If yes, you should consider a fixed denture. If it’s important that you choose the most economical option, a traditional removable denture may be best.
